Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
