A minimum of 13 people perish and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
